Indigenous Mental Health - Module 06 - Mabaig Part 02

Case study
A few months later, Annie has recovered from her illness and contacts the local mental health service, concerned about Mabaig’s mental state.  She tells you that Mabaig appeared to handle the tremendous pressure that he was under when she was in hospital in looking after the children, and seemed to cope well with his inability to return to Badu Island to perform the Mari Gethal duties for her deceased brother.

However, she tells you that Mabaig significantly increased his consumption of cannabis while she was in hospital.  Mabaig told her it was to help him cope with the all the stresses that he was having at the time.  However, he recently has become increasingly suspicious of Annie, and has accused her of having an affair.  Mabaig has also become increasingly concerned and frightened that people are going to perform sorcery on him because he did not perform the required Mari Gethal duties for his deceased brother in law.  Annie says that Mabaig has never previously been like this.  She is very worried about Mabaig’s jealous preoccupation about her.  She has talked to her family who have told her that they were quite accepting of Mabaig’s situation at the time of her brother’s death.  They bear him no ill will for his inability to perform the Mari Gethal duties.

Mabaig agrees to come in for an assessment.  Annie feels that he may have been depressed as a result of his inability to perform the required Mari Gethal duties.  He agrees that he is preoccupied with persecutory and jealous themes especially towards Annie and her family, but denies the experience of hallucinations or any thoughts of harm towards himself or to Annie and the children.
