Bereavement is a very important part of Torres Strait Islander (and Aboriginal) culture. Funerals can involve entire communities with many family and community members travel great distances to attend. Often reasons for death are sought and these may include sorcery or blaming another individual. This may result in anger, fear of payback, fear of further sorcery, etc.
People experiencing significant grief are not traditionally referred to mental health services for assistance. |
